The Doomsday Clock, developed by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, is a theoretical clock that shows how close humanity is to destruction by nuclear war (or midnight). The clock is drawn closer to midnight whenever a dangerous geopolitical event occurs (such as a nuclear weapon test) or drawn farther from midnight whenever a peaceful event occurs (such as a treaty being signed). The Clock was established in 1947 following World War II. As of January 27, 2017, the clock is at 2 1/2 minutes to midnight, but the time has varied over the past 70 years of its existence.
